    Preview: Braves at Nationals

    Current Conditions - Washington

    Partly sunny 82 °F
    Wind: SSW 4.6
    5-Day Forecast
GAME: Atlanta Braves (44-72) at Washington Nationals (67-47)
    DATE/TIME: Saturday, August 13 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Nationals Park, Washington, District of Columbia
    LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Atlanta Braves lost their first nine games of the season, and the Washington Nationals did the beating in six of those contests. But while the Braves still own the worst record in the majors and the Nationals sit atop the National League East, Atlanta comes into Saturday’s middle contest of a three-game series at Washington with momentum after pounding three homers in Friday’s 8-5 victory.

The Braves have played much better this summer under interim manager Brian Snitker, going 16-15 since July 7 while belting 33 homers and scoring 4.1 runs per contest. Washington allowed more than four runs for just the third time in its past 14 games. Jayson Werth’s RBI double in the seventh extended his on-base streak to 41 games, just two off Ryan Zimmerman’s franchise record. Rookie Trea Turner continues to excel, going 3-for-5 – his fourth multi-hit game of the month – and stealing two bases to give him 10 swipes in 25 games with the Nationals.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FSN South (Atlanta), MASN (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves RH Rob Whalen (1-0, 5.73 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Reynaldo Lopez (0-1, 9.35)

Whalen settled down after a rocky (albeit victorious) major-league debut in his second start Monday at Milwaukee, striking out seven against only one walk in six innings. He gave up three runs on five hits in the no-decision, five days after the 22-year-old gave up four first-inning runs and walking four in five innings against Pittsburgh. Opponents have taken advantage of Whalen’s delivery to the plate with runners on base, stealing five bases in 11 innings across his first two appearances.

The No. 3 prospect in Washington’s organization according to MLB.com, the 22-year-old Lopez features an outstanding fastball in the mid-90s with a sharp curveball. He gave up six runs on 10 hits with nine strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings during his major-league debut July 19 against the Dodgers, but despite walking five in his other start July 30 at San Francisco, Lopez limited the Giants to three runs on four hits. Lopez went 5-6 with a 3.17 ERA in 18 starts for Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Syracuse.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Washington again was without RF Bryce Harper Friday, the reigning NL MVP missing his fourth straight game with a stiff neck.

    2. Atlanta’s victory in the series opener snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Nationals dating to last season, and ended a 14-game skid at Nationals Park.

    3. The Nationals' bullpen allowed two runs in 3 2/3 innings Friday, the fourth time in eight games Washington relievers have surrendered at least one run.

    PREDICTION: Braves 4, Nationals 3

        Preview: Reds at Brewers

        Current Conditions - Milwaukee

        Cloudy 73 °F
        Wind: NNW 3.5
        5-Day Forecast
GAME: Cincinnati Reds (47-67) at Milwaukee Brewers (51-63)
        DATE/TIME: Saturday, August 13 - 7:10 PM EST
        WHERE: Miller Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
        LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Judging by wins and losses, Dan Straily appears to be having an average season for the Cincinnati Reds. That's hardly the case for the right-hander, who looks to remain undefeated since the All-Star break when Cincinnati continues a three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers and right-hander Zach Davies, who is unbeaten in his last six outings.

Straily and Davies squared off against one another on July 17 and each pitcher turned in one of his best performances of the season, although neither factored in the decision. Straily scattered three hits over seven innings while Davies matched him with seven scoreless frames of four-hit ball in an 1-0 victory for the Reds. Joey Votto, Adam Duvall and Brandon Phillips, Cincinnati's Nos. 3-5 hitters, combined to go 8-for-13 in Friday's 7-4 victory. Brewers catcher Manny Pina, 6-for-12 since his recall from the minors, hit his first career homer Friday to give him consecutive three-RBI games.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Ohio (Cincinnati), FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds RH Dan Straily (7-6, 3.76 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Zach Davies (9-4, 3.58)

Straily churned out his seventh consecutive quality start at Pittsburgh on Sunday, allowing two runs on three hits over six innings to improve to 3-0 in five turns since the All-Star break. One problem for Straily has been the long ball, with nine homers surrendered in his last eight starts, but he has managed to minimize the damage. He is 4-5 with a 4.34 ERA away from home but has won his last two road starts.

Davies came away with a no-decision versus Atlanta his last time out despite his fifth quality start in six outings, giving up three runs on over seven innings. The 23-year-old Davies had won his previous three turns and is 4-0 in six starts since July 5, permitting a total of 10 earned runs over 39 innings. He is making his third start against the Reds, having beaten them with 5 2/3 innings of two-run ball on May 27.

        WALK-OFFS

        1. Phillips is 16-for-30 with six multiple-hit games and nine RBIs in his last eight contests.

        2. Brewers 2B Scooter Gennett has hit safely in 18 of his last 20 games.

        3. Reds CF Billy Hamilton joined Joe Morgan and Bob Bescher as the only players in franchise history with at least three 50-steal seasons.

        PREDICTION: Brewers 4, Reds 3

            Wind: W 9.2
            5-Day Forecast
GAME: San Diego Padres (50-65) at New York Mets (57-58)
            DATE/TIME: Saturday, August 13 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Citi Field, New York City, New York
            LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

If Jacob deGrom was receiving any kind of offensive support from the slumping New York Mets, he could be on the verge of establishing a career high for victories. Instead, deGrom looks to continue his stellar stretch of pitching when he goes for his eighth win Saturday night against the visiting San Diego Padres.

The Mets have provided two runs or fewer in seven of the last 12 outings for deGrom, who has allowed one run over his last three turns but has been forced to settle for a pair of no-decisions. New York needs another big performance from deGrom after tumbling to its fourth straight defeat in Friday's 8-6 setback to drop below .500 for the first time since April 17. Catcher Travis d'Arnaud broke an 0-for-10 skid by going 3-for-4 with a two-run homer for the Mets, who are three games behind Miami for the second wild card in the National League. San Diego's Ryan Schimpf, the NL Rookie of the Month in July, belted two of his team's four home runs and had a career-high six RBIs in the series opener.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN San Diego, WPIX (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RH Jarred Cosart (0-1, 5.79 ERA) vs. Mets RH Jacob deGrom (7-5, 2.35)

Cosart has not made much of an impression since his acquisition from Miami at the trade deadline. He lasted only 3 1/3 innings in his first start with the Padres, permitting only one hit while yielding a staggering six walks in a no-decision versus Milwaukee. Cosart, who gave up three runs over 4 2/3 frames versus New York in his season debut, went five innings versus Philadelphia on Sunday and was tagged for five runs and 10 hits.

DeGrom had his scoreless innings streak halted at 20 in his last start, when he was saddled with a no-decision despite limiting Detroit to one run and seven hits over 6 2/3 frames. In his previous two turns, both at Citi Field, he blanked the New York Yankees and Colorado on four and five hits respectively. DeGrom took the loss at San Diego in his fourth start of the season, giving up three runs on eight hits while lasting only five innings.

            WALK-OFFS

            1. The Mets are 67-3 since the start of 2015 when scoring at least three runs -- and two of the losses have been to San Diego.

            2. Schimpf has 31 hits on the season and 24 have been for extra bases.

            3. Mets RHP Zack Wheeler has an appointment with Dr. James Andrews after feeling discomfort in his surgically repaired elbow.

The Kansas City Royals are making a frantic dash to get back in the American League wild-card race and seek to win for the sixth time in seven games when they visit the Minnesota Twins on Saturday. Kansas City recorded a 7-3 victory in the opener of the three-game set to improve to 20-38 on the road this season.

The Royals are 6 1/2 games behind Boston for the AL's second wild card and not really part of the AL Central race as they stand 10 games behind first-place Cleveland. Kansas City's Kendrys Morales returned from a one-game suspension and reached base four times while belting his 19th homer of the campaign. Minnesota, which has lost four consecutive games, scored its runs in Friday's loss on Brian Dozier's two-run homer and Miguel Sano's solo shot. Dozier has seven blasts, five doubles and 16 RBIs over his last 13 games, while Sano is 12-for-30 with five homers and eight RBIs during his eight-game hitting streak.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals RH Dillon Gee (4-5, 4.54 ERA) vs. Twins RH Tyler Duffey (7-8, 5.93)

Gee is being called on to start despite picking up the victory with two innings of relief on Wednesday. He was 0-3 with a 5.88 ERA in his previous five appearances - all starts - and served up four homers over his last three turns. Gee is 1-1 with a 3.29 ERA in three career appearances (two starts) against Minnesota and lost on May 25, when he was roughed up for six runs (five earned) and 10 hits in four-plus innings.

Duffey has won consecutive starts and was particularly sharp while beating Houston in his last turn. He allowed one run and four hits while striking out eight in six innings against the Astros after being rocked for 16 runs and 25 hits in just 9 2/3 frames over his previous three outings. Duffey defeated the Royals on May 25 in his lone career start against them despite giving up five runs and nine hits in 6 2/3 innings.

                WALK-OFFS

                1. The Royals are 6-1 against the Twins this season and have scored seven or more runs in four of the victories.

                2. Minnesota placed LHP Tommy Milone (biceps tendinitis) on the 15-day disabled list and recalled LHP Pat Dean from Triple-A Rochester.

                3. Kansas City OF Paulo Orlando recorded two hits on Friday and is 17-for-46 with six multi-hit performances this month.

                PREDICTION: Royals 6, Twins 4

                    Preview: Diamondbacks at Red Sox

                    Cloudy 69 °F
                    Wind: NNE 8.1
                    5-Day Forecast
GAME: Arizona Diamondbacks (48-67) at Boston Red Sox (62-52)
                    DATE/TIME: Saturday, August 13 - 7:10 PM EST
                    WHERE: Fenway Park, Boston, Massachusetts

Boston Red Sox veteran Hanley Ramirez silenced any talk of a potential back injury by belting a pair of three-run homers in a series-opening victory over the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks. The 32-year-old Dominican looks to continue the power surge on the heels of his 20th career multi-homer performance as the Red Sox vie for a series victory over the Diamondbacks on Saturday.

Ramirez has responded to a 0-for-15 stretch over five games by going 4-for-7 with eight RBIs in his last two contests heading into Saturday's tilt versus right-hander Archie Bradley. David Ortiz homered for the first time in August to highlight a three-hit performance in Friday's 9-4 victory for Boston, which has posted wins in just two of its last six to inch closer to American League East heavyweights Toronto and Baltimore. Arizona's postseason aspirations effectively were dashed some time ago, but Tuffy Gosewisch is swinging a hot bat by going deep in back-to-back contests. Paul Goldschmidt is 7-for-15 with one homer and four RBIs in his last four games and is 5-for-16 with two blasts in four career contests versus the Red Sox.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Arizona, NESN (Boston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks RH Archie Bradley (4-7, 4.80 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH Clay Buchholz (4-9, 5.64)

Bradley settled for a no-decision after seeing his pitch count skyrocket to 116, forcing him to exit after 4 2/3 innings despite yielding three runs on as many hits against Milwaukee on Sunday. The 24-year-old struck out eight and looked significantly more comfortable than his previous start on Aug. 1, when he was shredded for eight runs on 12 hits in a 14-1 shellacking by Washington. Bradley, who has posted a 3.38 ERA in his last eight road appearances, will be making his 25th career start and first versus Boston.

All-Star knuckleballer Steven Wright's shoulder injury has opened a door for Buchholz to make his first start since July 2. Buchholz, who will turn 32 on Sunday, owns a 6.31 ERA as starter this season and his 1-6 mark with a 5.80 ERA at Fenway Park hasn't been met by cheers in Boston. Buchholz yielded just one run in 8 1/3 innings in his last six relief appearances and pitched 5 2/3 frames to pick up the win in his lone career start versus Arizona on June 15, 2010.

                    WALK-OFFS

                    1. Boston 2B Dustin Pedroia, who is 6-for-16 with four doubles during his four-game hitting streak, is questionable for Saturday's tilt after leaving the series opener with flu-like symptoms.

                    2. Should Pedroia sit, 2B Aaron Hill will get another crack at his former team after collecting two singles on Friday to hit safely in eight of his last 11 games.

                    3. Arizona SS Chris Owings is 11-for-21 with four RBIs and as many runs scored during his five-game hitting streak.

PREDICTION: Red Sox 6, Diamondbacks 5

The Miami Marlins need to rediscover their offense if they wish to remain a prominent player in the postseason conversation. Limited to just four runs in the last three outings, Miami looks to find a spark on Saturday as it plays the second contest of its three-game interleague series versus the visiting Chicago White Sox.

The Marlins, who are clinging to a half-game lead over St. Louis for the National League's second wild-card spot, suffered a 4-2 setback in the series opener on Friday to fall for the seventh time in 10 outings this month. Marcell Ozuna has struggled in August, going 1-for-24 in his last seven games and is 4-for-16 with four strikeouts in four career contests versus Chicago. With his 5-year-old son in attendance, White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu had a pair of singles to improve to 15-for-36 with a three homers and six RBIs during his last eight contests. While Abreu has hit safely in five contests, teammate Tim Anderson has done him one better as Chicago has split its last eight games after going 1-6 in its previous seven.

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox RH James Shields (5-14, 5.43 ERA) vs. Marlins LH Adam Conley (8-6, 3.70)

Shields has answered six straight quality starts with a pair of tough ones, allowing 14 runs on 15 hits in his last 6 1/3 innings - including four homers in 1 1/3 frames of a shellacking by Baltimore on Sunday. The 34-year-old has posted a 6.68 ERA and 1.69 WHIP in 12 starts since being traded to the White Sox. Shields looks to rebound versus Miami, against which he owns a 6-2 career mark with two complete games and one shutout.

Aesthetically pleasing it was not, but Conley improved to 4-1 in his last seven starts on Sunday despite allowing six runs on seven hits - including two homers - in a 10-7 triumph at Colorado. The 26-year-old also permitted four walks and has issued 17 free passes in his last five outings. Through it all, Conley has pitched well at home, going 3-0 with a 1.37 ERA over his last four starts to improve to 4-3 while limiting the opposition to a .227 batting average.

                        WALK-OFFS

                        1. Miami is just 4-8 in interleague play, with its win total matching Cincinnati (4-11) for the fewest in the majors.

                        2. Chicago LF Melky Cabrera has three RBIs during his four-game hitting streak.

                        3. Marlins OF Christian Yelich, who struck out in all four at-bats on Friday, is 0-for-8 on the heels of an eight-game hitting streak.

PREDICTION: Marlins 4, White Sox 3

The Cleveland Indians have opened their season-high 11-game homestand with an offensive flourish, much to the dismay of the reeling Los Angeles Angels. After erupting for 27 runs on 31 hits to claim the first two contests, Cleveland looks to maintain its dominance of Los Angeles on Saturday when the clubs continue their four-game set at Progressive Field.

Jose Ramirez belted a solo homer in both Thursday's 14-4 rout and Friday's 13-3 victory to extend his hitting streak to 16 games and Mike Napoli continued to torment his former team by pushing his streak to 12 straight contests. The 34-year-old Napoli, who began his career with the Angels, is batting .337 with 19 homers and 43 RBIs against them since being traded to Toronto prior to the 2011 season. The Indians have won seven of their last eight encounters with the Angels, who have dropped a season-high eight in a row and mustered just 10 runs in their last five outings. Albert Pujols has two hits, two RBIs and a run scored in series after going 1-for-17 in his previous five games.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1, SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels RH Matt Shoemaker (6-12, 4.07 ERA) vs. Indians RH Mike Clevinger (0-1, 6.97)

Shoemaker fell to 1-3 in his last four starts on Sunday despite allowing thee runs on seven hits in as many innings of a 3-1 setback at Seattle. The loss was the third straight on the road for the 29-year-old, who is 3-8 with a 4.89 ERA away from Angel Stadium of Anaheim while permitting a .281 batting average to the opposition. Shoemaker has posted a 1-0 mark with an 0.82 ERA in three career starts versus Cleveland, including scattering three hits over eight scoreless innings en route to a no-decision on June 11.

Clevinger escaped considerable damage in his first start since being recalled from Triple-A Columbus, allowing two runs on seven hits and four walks in 4 1/3 innings of a no-decision versus Minnesota on Aug. 4. The window might not be open long for the 25-year-old as injured star Danny Salazar (elbow) is chomping at the bit to get back in the rotation. Clevinger was taken deep on one occasion by the Twins and has surrendered four homers in four starts this season.

                            WALK-OFFS

                            1. Cleveland 2B Jason Kipnis is 8-for-15 with four RBIs and six runs scored versus Los Angeles this season.

                            2. Angels 2B Cliff Pennington is 3-for-8 with a solo homer in the series after going hitless in 11 at-bats in his previous five games.

                            3. Indians SS Francisco Lindor has scored nine times during his eight-game hitting streak.

                            PREDICTION: Indians 8, Angels 3
