    Preview: Reds at Pirates

    Current Conditions - Pittsburgh

    Sunny 75 °F
    Wind: SSW 8.1
    5-Day Forecast
GAME: Cincinnati Reds (57-81) at Pittsburgh Pirates (68-69)
    DATE/TIME: Thursday, September 08 - 7:05 PM EST
    WHERE: PNC Park, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
    LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Pittsburgh Pirates' recent eight-game losing streak severely hurt their chances to stay afloat in the National League wild-card race, but the club might have one last gasp. The Pirates begin a long stretch of games against some of the NL's worst teams on Thursday when they open a four-game series against the visiting Cincinnati Reds.

Pittsburgh's 4-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday ended the club's season-long skid and gave it some momentum entering 15 straight versus losing teams - including eight against the last-place Reds and seven total between Milwaukee and Philadelphia. Jung Ho Kang's eighth-inning solo homer - his sixth in the last nine games - was the difference in the win over the Cardinals, pulling the Pirates to within 4 1/2 games of St. Louis and the New York Mets for the second wild-card spot. The Reds have lost four straight and at 57-81 are on the verge of clinching their 13th losing season in the last 16 years. Ivan Nova gets the nod for the Pirates, looking to build upon a 4-0 record and an ERA of 2.89 since joining the team at the trade deadline.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FSN Ohio (Cincinnati), ROOT (Pittsburgh)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds RH Dan Straily (11-7, 3.83 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Ivan Nova (11-6, 4.34)

Straily has had a rebirth in Cincinnati this season but has struggled in his last two outings, first allowing seven runs in 2 2/3 innings at the Los Angeles Angels before walking seven but letting up just one run in 5 2/3 frames to defeat St. Louis. He has also surrendered five homers in that span and entered Wednesday as one of five NL pitchers to give up at least 25. The 27-year-old ignited a personal four-game winning streak with a solid win at Pittsburgh on Aug. 7 and he has a 2.57 ERA in four games (three starts) versus the Pirates in 2016.

The Pirates lost for the first time in Nova's six starts with the team on Saturday, although he allowed just two runs in six innings. He struck out six and walked one, giving the Dominican Republic native two free passes in 37 1/3 innings since coming to Pittsburgh. He started that stretch with a seven-inning victory over the Reds on Aug. 6.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Pirates manager Clint Hurdle needs one win to become the sixth skipper in team history to reach 500.

    2. Reds SS Jose Peraza went 4-for-5 on Wednesday and has five multi-hit games in his last eight.

    3. Cincinnati CF Billy Hamilton (oblique) will not travel to Pittsburgh for the series.

    PREDICTION: Pirates 5, Reds 3

        Preview: Phillies at Nationals

        Current Conditions - Washington

        Partly sunny 79 °F
        Wind: S 9.2
        5-Day Forecast
GAME: Philadelphia Phillies (62-77) at Washington Nationals (82-57)
        DATE/TIME: Thursday, September 08 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Nationals Park, Washington, District of Columbia
        LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Washington Nationals are far enough ahead in the National League East that their biggest concern over the final 23 games is making sure all of the key players on the roster stay healthy down the stretch. The Nationals got some discouraging news in that regard on Wednesday and will try to move ahead with questions about ace Stephen Strasburg when they host the Philadelphia Phillies in the opener of a four-game series on Thursday.

Strasburg sat out 16 games to rest a sore elbow before returning on Wednesday but lasted only 2 1/3 innings against Atlanta before exiting again with an undisclosed injury. The Nationals went on to earn a 5-4 win in 11 innings following Strasburg's departure and own an 8 1/2-game lead in the division. Washington has been able to build up a big lead in the East due in part to its success against Atlanta (14-2) and Philadelphia (11-4), and the Phillies managed a total of three runs while being swept in a three-game series at home by the Nationals to close out August. Philadelphia grabbed a series win over the Miami Marlins this week but came out of the set with a bad taste after dropping the finale 6-0 on Wednesday.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, CSN Philadelphia, MASN (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Alec Asher (2015: 0-6, 9.31 ERA) vs. Nationals RH A.J. Cole (1-1, 3.86)

Asher began the season in the minors and served an 80-game suspension for a positive PED test before being reinstated and heading back to Triple-A in August. The 24-year-old went 4-2 with a 2.37 ERA in 12 minor-league starts this season while limiting opponents to a .201 batting average. Asher faced Washington once last season and allowed four runs and seven hits in five innings to suffer a loss.

Cole is making his fourth start since being recalled last month and is coming off his strongest outing after holding the New York Mets to one run and three hits in six innings to earn his first win. The Floridian yielded four home runs in his first three turns and owns 17 strikeouts in 18 2/3 innings. Cole struck out seven over 4 1/3 innings in a relief appearance against Philadelphia last season.

        WALK-OFFS

        1. Phillies 3B Maikel Franco (wrist) sat out Wednesday and is day-to-day.

        2. Washington activated INF Stephen Drew (vertigo) from the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday, and he singled, walked and scored after entering the game on a double switch.

        3. Philadelphia 2B Cesar Hernandez is 6-for-12 over the last three games.

        PREDICTION: Nationals 8, Phillies 2

            5-Day Forecast
GAME: Milwaukee Brewers (62-77) at St. Louis Cardinals (73-65)
            DATE/TIME: Thursday, September 08 - 7:15 PM EST
WHERE: Busch Stadium, St. Louis, Missouri

The St. Louis Cardinals have fallen into a tie for the National League's second wild card but attempt to regain sole possession of the spot when they open a four-game series against the host Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday. The Cardinals had their three-game winning streak halted when they dropped a 4-3 decision to Pittsburgh on Wednesday and slipped into a tie with the surging New York Mets, who have won five consecutive games.

St. Louis failed to go deep in Wednesday's defeat, ending its streak of 25 straight games with a homer - two shy of the major-league record set in 2002 by Texas. The Cardinals are just 30-37 at home as they begin a stretch of seven straight games at Busch Stadium. Milwaukee has won six of its last seven contests after taking two of three from the Chicago Cubs - including a 2-1 triumph on Wednesday in which Jonathan Villar belted a pair of solo home runs. Villar went 5-for-9 with three blasts in back-to-back wins over the Cubs and has gone deep four times over his last four games.

            TV:
7:15 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Junior Guerra (7-3, 2.85 ERA) vs. Cardinals LH Jaime Garcia (10-11, 4.41)

Guerra is making his second start after a four-week absence due to an elbow injury. He allowed five hits and two walks in 3 1/3 scoreless innings versus Pittsburgh in the first outing on Friday. Guerra posted a 4.50 ERA while dropping both starts against St. Louis this season and has served up homers to Matt Adams and Randal Grichuk.

Garcia has lost three straight starts and served up seven homers over his last four outings, posting an ugly 7.36 ERA during that stretch. He hopes to turn things around versus a team against which he typically fares well as he is 11-5 with a 2.61 ERA and two shutouts in 20 career appearances (19 starts) versus the Brewers. Garcia put forth the best effort of his career against Milwaukee on April 14, when he registered a career-high 13 strikeouts while tossing a one-hitter.

            WALK-OFFS

            1. Cardinals 1B/OF Brandon Moss is hitless with 11 strikeouts in 26 at-bats over his last eight games.

            2. Milwaukee LF Ryan Braun, who went 5-for-12 with two homers and five RBIs in the series against the Cubs, is just 10-for-56 with one homer versus Garcia.

            3. St. Louis LF Matt Holliday (broken left thumb) has been cleared to resume baseball activities and is aiming to return before the end of the season.

            PREDICTION: Cardinals 4, Brewers 2

The Colorado Rockies begin a seven-game road trip Thursday as they host the National League West-rival San Diego Padres for the opener of their four-game series. Colorado appeared on its way to a fourth loss in five contests Wednesday but rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to pull out a 6-5 victory over San Francisco.

Cristhian Adames delivered a pinch-hit, two-run double to end the contest while Nolan Arenado belted his NL-leading 37th home run to raise his major league-best RBI total to 118. San Diego was not as fortunate, dropping a 7-2 decision to visiting Boston for its fourth defeat in five contests. Alex Dickerson recorded two of the seven hits registered by the Padres, who have lost five of their last six at home. San Diego owns a 7-5 edge in the season series, winning four of the six contests played at Petco Park.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies RH Jeff Hoffman (0-2, 6.60 ERA) vs. Padres LH Clayton Richard (1-3, 3.29)

Hoffman remains in search of his first career victory as he makes his fourth major-league start. The 23-year-old native of New York, who had his outing pushed back a day due to cuts on his right thumb, settled for a no-decision against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Aug. 31 as he allowed two runs and three hits in five innings but walked three and failed to record a strikeout. Hoffman has served up four home runs in his three starts and issued eight walks while fanning only five batters in 15 frames.

Richard has pitched extremely well since joining the rotation, allowing a total of five runs - three earned - over 23 innings in four starts, but has just one victory to show for his efforts. The 32-year-old from Indiana lost his only turn at home on Aug. 20 despite giving up only two unearned runs and two hits in six frames versus Arizona. Richard, who re-signed with San Diego after being released by the Chicago Cubs in early August, has struggled against Colorado in his career as he is 2-4 with a 5.23 ERA in 14 games (13 starts).

                WALK-OFFS

                1. Arenado has recorded multiple hits in seven of his last 11 games.

                2. Colorado OF/1B Gerardo Parra likely will miss the series opener after suffering a strained right hamstring in the first inning of Wednesday's victory.

                3. San Diego recalled RHP Jake Smith, who recorded one save and a 1.59 ERA in six relief appearances with Double-A San Antonio after being claimed off waivers from San Francisco on July 6.

                PREDICTION: Padres 4, Rockies 3

The Seattle Mariners have scored 29 runs in the series against Texas but the visiting Rangers will be aiming to gain a split of the four-game set when the series concludes Thursday. Seattle first baseman Adam Lind fueled Wednesday's 8-3 victory with two homers and five RBIs but the win was only the Mariners' fourth in the past 15 games.

Seattle is five games behind the Baltimore Orioles for the second American League wild card while the Rangers hold a comfortable 8 1/2-game lead over the Houston Astros in the AL West. Mariners left fielder Seth Smith joined Lind in the starring role by going 3-for-3 with a homer Wednesday for his first multi-hit outing since Aug. 21. Texas, which has won 10 of its past 14 games, received a three-run homer by veteran Carlos Beltran, who is 18-for-41 with three homers and 12 RBIs during a 10-game hitting streak. Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre, who failed to touch home plate Wednesday after setting a franchise record by scoring a run in 12 consecutive games, is 7-for-13 with a homer and eight RBIs against scheduled Seattle starter Taijuan Walker.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers LH Derek Holland (7-6, 4.57 ERA) vs. Mariners RH Taijuan Walker (4-10, 4.60)

Holland has won back-to-back outings and has allowed three runs and 10 hits in 12 innings during the stretch. He has a 2.00 ERA in three starts since returning from a two-month absence because of a shoulder injury. Holland is 12-5 with a 3.56 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 24 career appearances (20 starts) against the Mariners and has struggled against Robinson Cano (16-for-45, two homers).

Walker served up three homers and was torched for six runs (five earned) and six hits in two-thirds of an inning while losing to the Los Angeles Angels in his last turn. He is 0-4 with a 9.55 ERA over his last five starts and has given up 23 homers in just 103 2/3 innings this season. Walker is 1-2 with a 4.76 ERA in six appearances (five starts) against the Rangers and was roughed up for six runs and nine hits in five innings while losing on June 3.

                    1. Rangers C Jonathan Lucroy is 14-for-35 with two homers and eight RBIs over the last 10 contests.

                    2. Cano (foot) went 1-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to 11 games one night after departing a game early.

                    3. Texas RHP Colby Lewis (lat) will start against the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday — his first major-league outing since being injured June 21.
