    Who’s In and Who’s Out
    By Bill Milton 02/25/2014
    Playbook.com

Here is a conference by conference look at my projected NCAA Tournament field:

Pac 12 - Arizona, UCLA, Stanford, Cal, Colorado, Arizona State are IN the tournament, with Utah and Oregon on my bubble. Many others have Oregon and Colorado flipped with the Buffs on the bubble, but I like that team a good deal whereas the Ducks are SO up and down it is hard to trust them. With that said, if UO goes on a tear in the conference tourney they could earn their way into the dance, likely knocking out one of their conference brethren, as do not see the Pac 12 getting seven bids.

Big 10 - Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Iowa and Ohio State are on, with Minnesota and Nebraska on the bubble. Minnesota can move into my "Probably In" column with a victory against the Hawkeyes tonite.

Big 12 - Kansas, Iowa State, Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas State are on in, with Oklahoma State on my Probably In list. West Virginia playing better of late but probably too little too late. Big question mark team for me is Baylor, as they have enough talent to make the Dance, but have not been playing up to that level.

ACC - Virginia, Duke, Syracuse, UNC, Pitt are in, with Clemson Probably In, with NCSU and Maryland on the bubble. Terps likely would have moved to Probably In class has they beaten Cuse last night.

AAC - Cincinnati, Louisville, SMU, Memphis, U Conn are in....and that is it, as no teams from the bottom of the AAC have anything close to the resume needed. SMU gets lots of deserved attention, but a note about Memphis: For years the knock was that first Calipari and then Pastner's team did not play quality competition. That has changed, and this team is still good.

A10 - The Atlantic 10 as a basketball hotbed? Yep. I have Saint Louis, VCU, St Joes, Richmond and U Mass as in the tournament, with George Washington in the Probably In category and Dayton on my bubble. Many talk of this league being underrated - but hard to make that argument when only once conference in the nation will have more bids.

Big East - How the mighty have fallen. It was only a few years back that the Big East got NINE teams to the Dance... this year I call for just a third of that as I have Creighton, Villanova and Xavier into the tournament with St Johns, Georgetown, Marquette, and Providence all on the outside looking in. Also, Butler stands at 12-15 on the year. That record shows just how good of a coach Brad Stephens is, and also what it is like to move up to a bigger conference most of the time. Folks trying to get Wichita State a #1 seed should consider two time national finalist Butler being 12-15 in their first year in the big leagues.

SEC - I have the SEC with two assured spots going to Florida and Kentucky, with two VERY tenuous bids at the moment going to Arkansas and Missouri. I have Georgia and Tennessee on the bubble. If Georgia wins tonite against Missouri I will be switching those two teams. [By the way, pretty strong chatter coming my way that former Wyoming Head Coach and current UNLV assistant Heath Schroyer will be the new coach at Tennessee if Cuonzo Martin is relieved of his duties - something that is looking more and more likely.]

Mountain West - San Diego State and New Mexico are sure things, and right now I have Boise State in the field as well - with the Broncos getting my final at large bid to the dance. UNLV is the tournament host, and as such if Dave Rice can get that talented team to actually play to its talent level they can still make the NCAA's.

West Coast Conference - Gonzaga is as always a lock for the tournament, and with BYU getting healthier they deserve to be in the Big Dance as well. I have St. Marys and USF on the bubble. Very unlikely the WCC gets four teams, but Dons do deserve at least bubble mention.

Missouri Valley Conference - Arch Madness not going to be as compelling this season as it has in the past, as Wichita State dominates what is a down year for the Valley. The only other MVC team under consideration for the Dance is Indiana State, and do not see them getting at At Large at all.

Conference USA - This is a one bid league, especially if Southern Miss wins the league. However, if the Eagles do not win the tournament, they have a pretty strong RPI and SOS case to make the Dance. I still have them out, but bubble teams around the nation will be rooting for USM to win the C-USA crown.

All of the rest of the field will come from the automatic qualifiers of the regular season (Ivy, Harvard your VERY likely winner) or conference tournament. One team to mention comes from the Big Sky, and that is Sacramento State. The Hornets are playing the best ball in the Big Sky, and while the event will almost assuredly be on the home floor of Weber State, do not be stunned if Sacto State sneaks away with that bid. The MAC, Sun Belt, Southern, and Colonial should also be solid conference tournaments.

Finally, since it seems mandatory for every one of these previews to list the last four teams and the first four out, I will do the same:

First Four Out: Providence, Oregon, Georgia, St Marys

Last Four In: BYU, Oklahoma State, Arkansas, Boise State

          Wednesday's Action
          By Brian Edwards
          VegasInsider.com

          Michigan at Purdue

As of early this morning, most books had Michigan (19-7 straight up, 13-10-1 against the spread) installed as a five-point road favorite.

With four games remaining, Michigan is all alone atop the Big Ten standings after beating Michigan State for the second time this season Sunday afternoon in Ann Arbor. Nik Stauskas and Caris LaVert scored 25 and 23 points, respectively, to lead the Wolverines to a 79-70 win as 1.5-point home favorites. They committed just two turnovers and forced the Spartans into 13 giveaways. Glenn Robinson III also chipped in 15 points.

John Beilein's team is No. 14 in the RPI Rankings behind a 4-4 record vs. the Top 25, a 9-5 ledger against the Top 50 and a 10-6 mark versus the Top 100.

Purdue (15-12 SU, 8-15 ATS) is hoping to get an NIT bid at this point. The Boilermakers are just 5-9 in Big Ten play and they are winless against five RPI Top-25 opponents and 2-8 versus the Top 50.

Matt Painter's team has won 12 of its 15 home games, only to limp to an atrocious 3-8 spread record. Purdue is 0-3 as a home underdog with defeats by margins of nine, 14 and 15 points.

Purdue has lost back-to-back games since trouncing arch-rival Indiana at home two Saturdays ago. The Boilermakers got blasted 94-79 at home by Michigan State last Thursday. Then on Sunday at Nebraska, they were smashed 76-57 as 5.5-point underdogs. Bryson Scott was the only Boiler to show up in Lincoln, producing a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The 'under' is 13-10 overall for the Boilers, 6-5 in its home games.

The 'over' has cashed in three of Michigan's last four games to improve to 13-10-1 overall.

Michigan has won three in a row over Purdue in this Big Ten rivalry and it hasn't tasted defeat in West Lafayette since 2010. However, the Boilers own a 3-0-1 spread record in the last four encounters. The 'over' is 5-1 in the last six head-to-head meetings. When these schools squared off in Ann Arbor on Jan. 30, Michigan captured a 75-66 home win but Purdue took the cash as an 11-point underdog. Stauskas scored a team-best 16 points, while A.J. Hammons also had 16 points and eight boards in the losing effort.

The Big Ten Network will have the telecast at 7:00 p.m. Eastern.

North Carolina at North Carolina State

As of early this morning, most books had North Carolina (20-7 straight up, 16-11 against the spread) as a 4.5-point road favorite.

North Carolina State (17-10 SU, 12-11-1 ATS) has won six of its last nine games both SU and ATS, including Saturday's 71-64 win at Va. Tech as a 2.5-point road 'chalk.' T.J. Warren exploded for a game-high 31 points to lead the Wolfpack into the win column.

Mark Gottfried's team is sitting at No. 55 in the RPI Rankings, leaving it starving for a win in this spot. The Wolfpack blew a golden opportunity to get a signature win at Syracuse two Saturdays ago, in part due to a shaky call but mostly due to a costly turnover. N.C. State is winless in seven games against the RPI Top 50 and has a 3-8 record versus the Top 100.

North Carolina has won nine in a row both SU and ATS to improve to 10-4 in ACC action. Roy Williams's team is coming off Saturday's 105-72 win over Wake Forest as a 14-point home favorite. Leslie McDonald led six double-figure scorers with 19 points thanks to 5-of-6 shooting from 3-point land.

UNC's surge has allowed it to climb to No. 22 in the RPI Rankings. The Tar Heels 3-3 against the RPI Top 25, 6-3 vs. the Top 50 and 10-4 against Top-100 foes.

UNC has dominated this Tobacco Road Rivalry recently, winning nine of the last 10 meetings while going 8-2 versus the number. When these teams met in Chapel Hill on Feb. 1, the Tar Heels collected an 84-70 win as 9.5-point home favorites. McDonald scored a team-high 20 points, while James Michael McAdoo had a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Marcus Paige finished with 15 points and five assists. In the losing effort, Warren had 21 points, eight boards, three steals and two blocked shots. Desmond Lee added 18 points.

The 'over' is on a 6-2 run in N.C. State's last eight games, cashing in three straight home contests. For the season, the Wolfpack has seen the 'under' go 12-11-1 overall, 6-6 in its home outings.

The 'over' is in the midst of an 8-3 spree in UNC's last 11 games to improve to 13-13 overall.

Gamblers can tune into this ACC showdown at 8:00 p.m. Eastern on DirecTV channel 724 as part of the ESPN Game Plan.

          B.E.'s Bonus Nuggets

After getting clubbed 71-56 last night in Athens, Missouri fell into ninth place in the SEC and one game below .500 in conference play. The Tigers got swept by Georgia this year and suffered another killer loss this past Saturday at Alabama. The Bulldogs are in third place in the SEC with a 10-5 record in league play, but they have no shot at an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. But UGA has saved Mark Fox's job and will have a good squad next year, assuming Charles Mann and Kenny Gaines return healthy.

Nebraska is on an 11-1 ATS run in its last 12 games as it rolls into Champaign-Urbana tonight to face Illinois as an underdog.

Florida survived a game effort from Vanderbilt last night thanks to solid defense and the offense of Dorian Finney-Smith, who broke out of a prolonged slump to score 19 points and grab nine rebounds. UF back-up freshman PG Kasey Hill missed his third consecutive game with a groin injury. I would think Hill will be ready for Saturday's home game vs. LSU.

Xavier and Kansas State picked up monster road wins last night at State John's and at Texas Tech, respectively. However, the biggest bubble winner on Tuesday had to be Minnesota. The Gophers knocked off Iowa 95-89 as 3.5-point home underdogs. Austin Hollins dropped 27 points on the Hawkeyes.

DePaul ended its 10-game losing streak by beating Seton Hall 65-60 last night as a 5.5-point home underdog.

The 'under' improved to 21-4 in Bradley games when its 69-49 home loss to Wichita State saw the 118 combined points stay 'under' the 130.5-point total.

With the win over Bradley, the Shockers became the first 30-0 team since the 1990-1991 UNLV team led by Larry Johnson, Stacy 'The Plastic Man' Augmon, Greg Anthony and Anderson Hunt.

            NCAA Tournament Upset Threats
            By Joe Nelson
            Playbook.com

The 2013 NCAA Tournament featured some big surprises with teams seeded #9, #12, #13, and #15 all making it to the Sweet 16, with #9 seed Wichita State making the Final Four along with two #4 seeds. This year's tournament may not have a 'Dunk City' or a 'shocking' final four entrant but here are a few deep sleepers that could win a few games from double-digit seed positions. That is, of course, if they get in.

Wisconsin-Green Bay: The Horizon League lost a couple of programs before this season (notably Butler) but Green Bay has dominated the league at 12-2 while going 22-5 overall. The Phoenix will be the heavy favorite to win the automatic tournament bid in the post-season tournament but they have a chance to get an at-large bid if they get upset. Green Bay has played two elite teams this season and they played commendably in those contests, beating Virginia and losing by just three against Wisconsin. 7'1" senior center Alec Brown is a NBA prospect while the backcourt is led by diminutive junior Keifer Sykes who has scored over 20 points per game. The Phoenix has solid depth with eight players averaging at least 11 minutes per game and there is good balance with strong efficiency numbers on both sides of the ball. Green Bay has shown versatility winning with great defense in holding 12 foes to fewer than 60 points this season while also scoring 80 or more points nine separate times. This is a complete team with veteran talent and a team that no foe will want to draw in a possibly the dreaded #5/12 matchup.

St. John's: It has taken some time to develop but this young Red Storm squad had hit its stride late in the season. Half of the 10 losses for St. John's have come against top 10 RPI teams and all of those games were close games with three of the five defeats decided by five points or less. St. John's nearly won at Villanova last weekend and while this could be a team that ends up right on the bubble, wins in nine of the last 11 games could help to benefit the case for inclusion. St. John's does not have a great deal of quality wins outside of a win over Creighton but this squad has next level talent and a proven veteran coach that has the team peaking at the right time after some early ups-and-downs. Having already played many of the top teams in the country should help to prepare the team for a potential first round matchup against a less talented team in a likely #8/9 or #7/10 draw should St. John's finish up the season strong. St. John's would also be a candidate for one of the first four play-in games depending on how the season finishes out and where the bubble ends up. In recent NCAA Tournaments teams like Virginia Commonwealth and LaSalle have used those games as springboards to great runs in March Madness and this is a team to keep an eye should they make the dance field.

Richmond: The Atlantic 10 has no shortage of quality teams with St. Louis, Virginia Commonwealth, George Washington, and St. Joseph's getting the most attention. Richmond is a team that may be overlooked as the Spiders feature one of the best defenses in the conference and this squad is battle tested after playing several prominent non-conference games. The Spiders did not win many of those games which will have the program teetering on the NCAA Tournament bubble but playing close with teams with elite talent like Florida and North Carolina should give the team confidence in any matchup. The Spiders are led by their backcourt with Cedrick Lindsay and Kendall Anthony being the top performers on the team and there has been great improvement as the year has gone by from the talented young frontcourt. Richmond has been one of the better teams in the nation at defending the 3-point shot which means they could give trouble to a favorite that is reliant on outside shooting in a tournament setting. Richmond has work to do to even make the field but this team could be an overlooked upset threat in March.

Middle Tennessee State: The Blue Raiders currently lead the Conference USA standings but no team in the league is a guaranteed a spot in the big dance. Five teams are currently 10-3 or better in the standings as the monster league with 16 teams is watered down with some of the new entrants struggling at the bottom. Middle Tennessee State has made a smooth transition to the conference but they will need to win the conference tournament to get into the NCAA Tournament field. No team is playing better late in the season with the Blue Raiders winning nine in a row heading into this week's big game at Louisiana Tech. Five wins on current streak have come on the road and the Blue Raiders played some credible games in the non-conference season with losses to Florida, Cincinnati, and Mississippi. Being fairly centrally located can also be a plus for the Blue Raiders in the tournament as they won't face long travel unless they are sent out west to San Diego or Spokane. This is a very tough defensive team that forces a great deal of turnovers with a lot of pressure, something that has led teams like Louisville and VCU to tournament success in recent years. A veteran squad with four seniors that contribute significantly could be a threat if they can get into the picture as last season the Blue Raiders met disappointment with a loss in a first four game with St. Mary's.

Nebraska: The Cornhuskers started the Big Ten season 0-4 and that was after suffering four non-conference losses. Nebraska is 8-2 in the last 10 games however with marquee wins over Ohio State and at Michigan State. This is a team that is on the wrong side of the NCAA Tournament bubble right now but with a favorable schedule down the stretch they could make a compelling case for inclusion barring a bad loss or a one-and-done showing in the Big Ten tournament. Nebraska might need to beat Wisconsin in the regular season finale to get into the tournament but should the Huskers take three of the final four games and finish 11-7 in a very strong Big Ten, it will be tough to leave them out. This is a team that no one will want to see lined up against them in the bracket as a young team with only one senior has improved dramatically as the season has gone on and is starting to win games away from home. Six of the last seven foes have been held below 60 points as the defensive efficiency ratings continue to support Nebraska as a high quality team and while the offense is not explosive, the Huskers do a great job of taking care of the ball and getting to the line. This is a team that is much better than the overall season picture represents and would be a dangerous double-digit seed in the big dance.
