      Preview: Clemson at Auburn

When: 9:00 PM ET, Saturday, September 3, 2016
Where: Jordan Hare Stadium, Auburn, Alabama

Clemson fell five agonizing points shy of winning the national championship last season, and with Heisman frontrunner Deshaun Watson back at quarterback the second-ranked Tigers are one of the playoff favorites again as they kick off the new season Saturday at Auburn in a tough early-season test. The biggest question for Clemson rests on defense, where seven starters will make their debut.

“I think it’s a good team,” Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said during preseason. “We’ve got a good roster. It’s talented.” That talent gets a big test early with a visit to The Plains, where Auburn coach Gus Malzahn has named sophomore Sean White the starting quarterback but hinted both Jeremy Johnson and John Franklin III could play this season. “We’re not ready to say who will be the first one in,” Malzahn said of his backups. “I think both guys are good at certain things.” Junior defensive end Carl Lawson is a preseason All-America candidate who only has played seven games the past two years due to hip and knee injuries.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: Clemson -7.5

ABOUT CLEMSON (2015: 14-1): Watson dazzled as a sophomore, becoming the first FBS quarterback to pass for more than 4,000 yards and rush for 1,000-plus yards en route to finishing third in the Heisman voting. He is joined by 1,527-yard rushing workhorse Wayne Gallman and the return of several top receiving targets, including Mike Williams, who hauled in 1,030 yards receiving in 2014 before breaking a bone in his neck early last season. Defensively, Clemson replaces three defensive backs and two key pass rushers, but returns talented linebacker Ben Boulware.

ABOUT AUBURN (2015: 7-6): White took over for Johnson early last season and completed 58 percent of his passes, but the Tigers feature a mostly inexperienced running back and receiving corps entering the opener. Kevin Steele is Auburn's fifth defensive coordinator in the past six seasons, turning to Montravius Adams and Lawson to anchor the defensive line. Kicker Daniel Carlson booted four field goals of 50 or more yards a season ago, earning All-SEC first-team honors.

      EXTRA POINTS

      1. Johnson passed for 1,053 yards and 10 touchdowns, and rushed for six scores last season.

      2. Clemson allowed only 15 sacks in 15 games in 2015 - remarkable considering Watson rushed 207 times a season ago.

      3. Auburn leads the all-time series 34-13-2, with Clemson winning the last meeting 26-19 in the 2012 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Classic.

      PREDICTION: Clemson 28, Auburn 20

          Preview: Arizona at Brigham Young

When: 10:30 PM ET, Saturday, September 3, 2016
Where: University of Phoenix Stadium, Glendale, Arizona

Arizona running back Nick Wilson has been especially strong this time of year, and he'll look for another fast start Saturday night when the Wildcats host BYU in their season opener in Glendale, Ariz. Wilson is averaging 130 rushing yards in eight career games with Arizona during August and September, but injuries have caused him to miss five games and play hurt in several others following those hot starts, taking some of the steam out of the Wildcats as well.

The biggest question mark heading into the season is how Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez will handle his quarterback situation. Anu Solomon was the primary starter last season and also got off to a sizzling start before concussions seven weeks apart against UCLA and Utah caused him to miss games and seemed to stunt his grown as a quarterback. Rodriguez said earlier this week that both Solomon and Brandon Dawkins could play against BYU, a team that will be breaking in a new head coach and several key assistants. The Cougars were dealing with a similar quarterback situation, but rookie coach Kalani Sitake has already decided that Taysom Hill, who turned 26 last month, won the job over last season's starter, Tanner Mangum.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, FOX Sports 1. LINE: Arizona -1.

ABOUT BYU (2015: 9-4): The Cougars will display a variety of pro-style sets under new offensive coordinator Ty Detmer, who threw for more than 15,000 yards in his BYU career. Hill started last year's season opener against Nebraska before suffering a season-ending injury for the second straight year, a fractured foot that opened the door for Mangum to throw for 3,377 yards and 23 touchdowns. The Cougars should have a much better running game led by Jamaal Williams, who sat out last season after withdrawing from school and returns 930 yards shy of breaking the school rushing record. Where they'll need players to step up is the receiving corps, where only one of the top four pass catchers return from last season and that's Nick Kurtz, who caught 39 passes for 578 yards and three touchdowns.

ABOUT ARIZONA (2015: 7-6): Dawkins played just one full game last season, the final regular season contest against Arizona State after Solomon suffered his second concussion, and showed his versatility, throwing for 305 yards and two touchdowns and running for another 78 yards and a score in the 52-37 loss. Like the Cougars, the Wildcats will also be thin on experience at wide receiver compared to a year ago, as last season's leading receiver, Cayleb Jones, left early for the NFL and second-leading receiver Johnny Jackson used up his eligibility. Samajie Grant and Nate Phillips will inherit those primary roles for their senior years and they're not completely green, combining for 145 receptions and 14 touchdowns in their Arizona careers. Freddie Tagaloa is expected to anchor an offensive line still reeling from the sudden death last month of Zach Hemmila, who started six games at left guard last season.

          EXTRA POINTS

          1. Sitake is just the fourth head coach for BYU since 1972, and the first FBS head coach of Tongan descent.

          2. Arizona returns five of its top seven tacklers from last season and will feature a new defensive coordinator in Marcel Yates, who spent the last two seasons in the same capacity at Boise State.

          3. The Wildcats haven't played a regular-season game against an out-of-state opponent in the Phoenix area since 1956.

          PREDICTION: Arizona 38, BYU 17

Preview: Northern Arizona at Arizona State

When: 10:45 PM ET, Saturday, September 3, 2016
Where: Sun Devil Stadium, Tempe, Arizona

Arizona State enters its season opener Saturday night against visiting Northern Arizona with the distinction of being one of two teams in the nation without a quarterback that's thrown at least one pass at the Division I college level. Mike Bercovici threw 532 of the team's 534 passes last season and a punter and wide receiver heaved the other two, leaving sophomore Manny Wilkins and redshirt freshman Brady White to battle for the starting job this spring and summer.

Wilkins at least trotted on the field last season -- rushing the ball seven times for 55 yards -- and seems to have the edge on White based on percentage of practice reps with the first-team offense. He'll get to learn on the job under a pair of new coaches to Arizona State, offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey, who served in the same capacity for Southern Miss the previous two years, and wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator Jay Norvell, who came over from Texas. The area where the Sun Devils really need to see improvement is on the defensive side of the ball, where they surrendered at least 34 points in six of the last seven games last season. They can't afford to get into a shootout with Northern Arizona, which is expected to be much improved from a solid 2015 season and was picked to win the Big Sky Conference.

TV: 10:45 p.m. ET, Pac-12 Network. LINE: OFF.

ABOUT NORTHERN ARIZONA (2015: 7-4): The reason Arizona State needs to be on its toes against the Lumberjacks is quarterback Case Cookus, who broke an 11-year-old FCS freshman record with 37 touchdown passes last season. Cookus, the FCS freshman of the year, was solid against the only major conference opponent he has faced, competing 8-of-13 passes for 190 yards and a touchdown at Arizona last season, while playing just the first half of the 77-13 loss. Cookus and the Lumberjacks also welcome back last season's top receiver, Emmanuel Butler, a Phoenix native who caught 64 passes for 1,208 yards and 15 touchdowns.

ABOUT ARIZONA STATE (2015: 6-7): Among the players who will likely be saddled with improving the defense is JoJo Wicker, who started 10 games at defensive end as a true freshman last season and recorded four sacks and 7 1/2 tackles for loss. Wicker has slimmed down about 15 pounds to 260 and has been practicing at the inside linebacker position during summer camp. Arizona State coach Todd Graham has compared Wicker to Will Sutton, who starred at defensive end for the Sun Devils from 2009-13 and currently suits up for the Chicago Bears.

                EXTRA POINTS

                1. Arizona State P Matt Haack not only completed his only pass last season -- a 27-yarder -- but finished second in the FBS with 32 punts downed inside the opponent's 20-yard line.

                2. Arizona State's returning offensive linemen have combined to make 15 starts, fifth-fewest of any team in the country.

                3. Northern Arizona is ranked No. 18 in both of the major preseason FCS polls.

PREDICTION: Northern Arizona 31, Arizona State 28
